Teacher's Tools - Set Up Class Accounts
1. Set Up Class Accounts
Creating a Teacher’s Account
If a teacher does not have an account, a registration option at the bottom of the logon screen permits an account to be created. If you need to register, please do so at:
Selecting this option permits an account to be created by providing five pieces of information: (1) name, (2) school, (3) e-mail address, (4) user name, and (5) password.
Creating Student Accounts
Once the teacher logs in, the option labeled “Classes” on the menu on the left-hand side of the setup page permits classes of student accounts to be created. Selecting this Classes option on the main screen produces a Class Setup screen. A drop-down menu at the top of the Class Setup screen offers two options:
Adding a Class Account
Selecting the Add / Edit Class option produces a screen that permits the teacher to assign a name to a class (3rd Period English) and a description (Creative Writing). The teacher is listed as the owner / creator of the class by default.
Editing options allow the teacher to return to this screen later to change the class name or description. At the end of the school year, a Delete option also permits the class to be deleted.
Adding Student Accounts to a Class
After one or more classes have been created, an option to Select a Class permits the teacher to add student accounts to the class. Each student account requires three pieces of information: (1) the student’s name, (2) a user name, and (3) a password. This option allows the teacher to create Digital Storyteller accounts for each student in a class as needed.
Assigning an Activity to a Student Account
Digital Storytelling encompasses a wide range of creativity, and teachers are constantly devising new approaches and classroom teaching strategies. In many cases, students may begin with a blank slate as they create their own story. In other cases, a teacher may desire to structure an activity around a common set of resources.
For example, the teacher may ask the students to re-tell a well-known story or fable, such as Cinderella. Folk stories drawn from many cultures can be employed in this type of exercise. In those cases, it is possible to provide a common set of images and resources that are automatically loaded when the student logs into their account.
A drop-down menu beside each student’s name in a class allows the teacher to assign an activity to the student. All of the students in the class can be assigned the same activity, or different activities can be assigned to different students.
